How to Write Cold DMs That Actually Convert: A Framework for LinkedIn, X, and Instagram

Most cold DMs get ignored because they sound like every other pitch. Use this framework to write DMs that reference context and earn replies.

The difference between a cold DM that gets a reply and one that gets ignored is usually three things: context, brevity, and a reason to respond. Most sales DMs fail on all three.

This framework works across LinkedIn, X, and Instagram because the principles are platform-agnostic: respect the buyer’s time, demonstrate relevance, and make it easy to engage.

The C-B-Q Framework

C: Context (1 sentence)

Why are you reaching out to this specific person right now? Reference something they recently posted, shared, or experienced.

Bad: “I came across your profile and thought we might be a good fit.” Good: “Saw your post about evaluating outbound tools for your growing SDR team.”

B: Bridge (1-2 sentences)

Connect their situation to a relevant insight, observation, or experience that adds value. Do not pitch your product yet.

Bad: “Our platform can help you increase productivity by 300%.” Good: “Most teams at your stage find that intent-based sourcing produces 5-10x better reply rates than cold email lists. The sourcing method matters more than the sequencing tool.”

Q: Question (1 sentence)

End with a specific question that is easy to answer and invites a genuine conversation. Do not ask for a meeting yet.

Bad: “Would you be open to a 30-minute call this week?” Good: “Have you tested social intent sourcing alongside your current cold email approach?”

Total message: 3-4 sentences, under 60 words

The entire DM should be readable in under 10 seconds on a mobile screen. Most LinkedIn and Instagram browsing happens on mobile. If your message requires scrolling, it is too long.

Platform-specific adjustments

LinkedIn DMs

  • Slightly more formal tone
  • Can reference professional context (role, company, industry)
  • Include your full name and title in profile

X DMs

  • More casual and direct tone
  • Reference tweets and conversations
  • Shorter messages preferred (2-3 sentences)

Instagram DMs

  • Most casual tone
  • Reference stories, posts, or shared interests
  • Visual context (respond to a story or post)

Why most cold DMs fail

The fundamental problem with cold DMs is not the writing. It is the timing. Even a perfectly crafted DM fails when it reaches someone who is not thinking about your category.

This is why signal-based DMs outperform cold DMs by 10-15x. When your message arrives at the moment a buyer has just expressed a need, even an average message gets a response.

Startupbricks generates contextual DMs automatically when a buyer posts a relevant signal. The message references their specific post, adds relevant insight, and invites conversation. Start a 3-day free trial.
