Andrey Azimov is one of the most inspiring figures in the global indie hacker community because he began his journey with almost zero formal computer programming education.

In early 2018, Andrey was a self-described “non-tech guy” from Ukraine living on savings in Bali. Staring down the barrel of running out of money and being forced to return to an office job, Andrey publicly set a terrifying deadline: generate $1,000/month in SaaS revenue within one calendar year, or quit indie hacking forever.

Not only did he achieve his goal, but his flagship creation, Sheet2Site, a tool that converts Google Sheets into fully functional websites without writing code, scaled to $15,000/month in MRR ($180,000 ARR) and won him the coveted Product Hunt Maker of the Year award in 2018, beating out venture-backed engineering teams from Silicon Valley.

Phase 1: The Non-Coder’s One-Year Ultimatum

Before building software, Andrey worked in marketing and sales operations. He had always wanted to build internet products, but every time he tried to learn programming languages like React, Python, or Ruby, he was overwhelmed by terminal commands, package managers, and database configurations.

By late 2017, Andrey’s savings were dwindling:

  • He had enough money to survive in Bali for approximately 12 months if he kept his living expenses under $1,000/month.
  • He declared a public challenge on Twitter and Telegram: “Hardcore Year”, he would build and launch small internet projects every month until he reached $1,000 MRR.

His initial experiments were basic:

  1. A MacBook Price Comparison Tool: Scraped prices across European stores. Made $0 and broke when store HTML changed.
  2. DarkModeList: A simple curated directory of apps supporting dark mode. Received traffic, but advertisers refused to sponsor it ($0 MRR).
  3. Telegram Currency Bot: Alerted expats to currency fluctuations. Made around $50 in tips.

Phase 2: The Google Sheet CMS Breakthrough

While building directories like DarkModeList, Andrey encountered a recurring frustration: updating databases was terrifying.

Whenever he wanted to add a new link, upload an image, or edit a description, he had to open a database administration tool or write SQL queries. One misplaced comma would crash his entire website.

One afternoon, Andrey had an epiphany:

“Why am I fighting complex relational databases? Everyone already knows how to enter rows and columns into Google Sheets. What if Google Sheets WAS the database?”

Andrey hacked together a basic JavaScript script that fetched rows from the Google Sheets API and dynamically rendered them inside a pre-built responsive HTML template.

He didn’t use a heavy backend framework. In column A, the user typed the title; in column B, the image URL; in column C, the description; in column D, the external link. The moment the user hit enter in their Google Sheet, their live website updated instantly.

He named it Sheet2Site.

Phase 3: The Product Hunt Launch & Viral Triumph

In March 2018, Andrey published Sheet2Site on Product Hunt with a transparent, vulnerable launch post explaining his “Hardcore Year” survival challenge.

The response was staggering:

  • Non-technical founders, marketers, and educators fell in love with the product. They could create job boards, link directories, product catalogs, and event landing pages in 5 minutes without touching code.
  • Sheet2Site became the #1 Product of the Day and #1 Product of the Week.
  • Hundreds of users signed up.

However, in the first version, Andrey hadn’t even integrated automated Stripe billing. He manually invoiced customers via PayPal and Stripe payment links, working 16 hours a day from coffee shops in Ubud to onboard users one by one.

By month 8 of his challenge, Sheet2Site reached $1,000 MRR, officially saving him from corporate employment. By month 11, it soared past $10,000 MRR.

Phase 4: Overcoming the API Limits & Scaling

As thousands of websites began running on Sheet2Site, Andrey ran into serious technical bottlenecks:

  1. Google Sheets API Rate Limits: When a Sheet2Site customer’s website went viral on Hacker News or Twitter, thousands of visitors queried Google’s API simultaneously, triggering 429 Too Many Requests errors.
  2. Caching Architecture: Andrey learned how to implement a Node.js caching proxy on AWS S3. Instead of hitting Google Sheets on every single pageview, Sheet2Site cached the spreadsheet data into JSON files, re-fetching only when the owner updated a row or every 15 minutes.
  3. Custom Domain Automation: Customers demanded the ability to connect their own custom domains (e.g., myjobboard.com). Andrey integrated Cloudflare SSL for SaaS and CNAME routing, turning Sheet2Site into a true website builder platform.

Phase 5: The “Maker of the Year” Crown

At the annual Product Hunt Golden Kitty Awards, Andrey was nominated for Maker of the Year alongside venture-backed Silicon Valley founders.

Because of his radical vulnerability, sharing his monthly revenues, his panic attacks, his struggles with coding bugs, and his daily routine on Twitter, the entire global indie maker community rallied behind him. Andrey won Maker of the Year 2018.

Sheet2Site settled into a durable, highly profitable micro-SaaS generating $15,000/month ($180,000 ARR) with virtually zero customer acquisition cost and minimal server expenses.

3 Playbook Rules for 0-to-1 Founders

1. Leverage Interfaces People Already Understand

Don’t force users to learn a complicated new software dashboard. Google Sheets is used by billions of people daily. By using Google Sheets as the CMS, Andrey eliminated the learning curve for non-technical users and turned a spreadsheet into an enterprise software interface.

2. Radical Vulnerability Is Unbeatable Marketing

Corporate startups hide their flaws behind sterile PR statements. Andrey shared his financial anxiety, his lack of coding experience, and his countdown to running out of money. Audiences root for authentic underdogs, not polished corporate logos.

3. Launch Before You Have Automation

Andrey didn’t wait until he had an automated billing engine, user authentication, or custom domain routing. He launched with a manual Stripe link and manually configured early customer domains by hand. Validate demand with manual sweat before spending 3 months automating code.
